Study of Developmental Changes of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase in Developing Chichen Liver

Abstract
This study is undertaken to investigate the change of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (EC 4. 1.1.32) activity during the chicken liver development. The results obtained were summerized as follows;
1. During one week before and following the hatching, the chicken liver showed a rapid growth in size and a linear increase in weight: the liver weigi!~t was O. lg on the 14th day embryo, 0, gg immediately after hatching and 1.4 on the 7th days.
2. From early embryonic stage the enzyme was determined in both fractions of miotchondria and cytoplasm of the liver. However, the enzyme activity was high in the mitochondria but very low in the cytoplasm, with changes as the embryo chick grew.
3. The rise in the activity of the enzyme of the embryo chick liver reached the peak within 2 to 3 days following the hatching to decline to the levels of an adult Iiver by the 15th day after the hatching. The pattern of the developmental increase iri the activity of cytoplasmic enzyme was sharper thau that of the mitochondria.
